Know the latest recommendations for medications to avoid using in older adults (65+).
The American Geriatrics Society has released their 2023 update. The AGS Beers Criteria®is an explicit list of Potentially Inappropriate Medications that are typically best avoided by older adults in most circumstances or under specific situations, such as in certain diseases or conditions.
Some highlights:
- Aspirin – Consider deprescribing aspirin in older adults already taking it for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
- Amitriptyline/Nortriptyline/Antidepressants with strong anticholinergic activity – Avoid use.
- Benzodiazepines – Avoid use.
- Sliding Scale Insulin – Avoid use.
